Key Aspects of the original method & Len’s Interpretation

  • Focus on Trends and Whaps:

The core of the book is identifying unusual fluctuations in odds on the tote board, known as “whaps,” (unusual odds changes) and understanding the “theory of trends” to determine when to follow them.

  • “No Handicapping”:

The book emphasizes that its methods are separate from traditional handicapping, offering a unique way to select horses based on betting patterns alone.

  • Applications:

The techniques are designed to help bettors spot horses with “smart money” (likely insider information) on them and to avoid picking horses with inflated odds.

Len’s Approach & Modern Day Solution

“‘Trends’ is the Key word and motivation behind Milt Gaines’ work.  The interpretation of trends however needs lots of experience. Further the noting down of trends is a strenuous exercise and takes away some of the enjoyment of horse racing.  That was certainly the case back in the day if you tried to use this methodology on paper.

But thanks to computer handicapping and now AI assistance with coding, spotting trends is actually a breeze.  I can ask my data base very complex questions that basically span the handicapping universe and it will provide me ‘trends’ in almost any area of the game.

I have lately been focusing on methods involving past odds as being a predictor of future performance. And, for good reason, since odds really tell the story of whether a horse has recently been seriously backed, or backed in a discernible pattern of predictable odds.

So, the premise is that more than any other factor, the pattern of odds displayed in the PPs  can consistently determine when a horse is on edge for a win or big effort.  And believe me — this works much more often than it doesn’t.

Milt’s concepts were groundbreaking, and now that they can be translated into computer code, the resulting Software program is a gem.

    The Columns

    • Each column entails several factors related to its title.  Len also has his usual ‘finite factor’ algorithm working in the background which gives plus or minus points to potential contenders.

    • R = # of races analyzed

    • LAST = days since last race

    • ML = morning line

    • TOT = total points earned from columns to the right

    • ODDS = odds pattern algorithms.  Some may be as simple as an improving odds pattern, while others are more complex like “pattern/odds drop/drop in class/T%”, etc.

    • J/T = jockey/trainer competence

    • SPEED = several speed factors considered (bris, drf, equibase, variants)

    • ITM = adjusted in the money % over past 12 to 24 months

    • PLSHO = % of 2nds & 3rds over past 12 to 24 months

    • ‘A total homerun!  Don’t think I have ever seen so many on the board hits from a program.’ Don Iverson, Kent, OH

    • ‘I just love this technology.  I have been a customer of yours for over 30 years and your products just keep getting better and better.’ Ivan Selkirk, Los Angeles, CA

    • ‘I had this book when it first came out and made some very nice hits with it, but it was a total bear to figure.  Your software provides incredible consistency.  Thanks!  Darrel Murphy, Spring, TX

  • The Testing Process

When we test products, we begin by trying them out on the toughest cards, which are usually big Stakes Day Cards.  If a product works very well on these days, then it will work even better on easier, everyday type cards.

Take a look below.  First you will see Travers Day at Saratoga, and then the following day, August 24.  👉👉From 24 total races, 👉you would have snagged 12 winners, including prices of $26, $21 and $11, and a whole boatload of 2nds and 3rds.

Below that you will see the 2025 Kentucky Derby card, where the Software performed admirably as well.

Kentucky Derby Card, 2025 — 4 winners, including a $29.86 Payoff, 5 2nds and 3 3rds!

Patch Adams wins a $500,000 Stakes race to pay $7.00.  The software is as good with Stakes races as with low-level claimers.
