Good and Great Trainers ‘spot’ their horses where they can win.  A horse does not go down to the Racing Secretary’s office and enter himself in a race.  That is the Trainer’s job, of course, and the competent guys/gals study all the conditions of an upcoming race, class, distance, surface, other entrants, etc., and determine whether or not his/her horse ‘fits’, i.e., has a good chance of earning a piece of the purse.  So how do we know when a trainer is correctly ‘spotting’ a horse for a big effort, and/or, a betting coup?  Listen to what Ray says:

‘First off, most betting ‘coups’ take place in sprint races, because there is far less that can go wrong than in two-turn races, and the inside bettors obviously want to make their coup as predictable as possible.  Also, most coups are stable coups, where extra money goes into the win and place pools from a horse’s connections.  While a few of these coups involve big mutuels, most do not.  These are generally solid, in form horses who go off in the 2/1 to 6/1 odds range.  So when you spot one of these stable coups, and I will show you how, you are almost always betting on a well-conditioned, and therefore more reliable, horse.

But regardless of the type of coup, stable or trainer & friends, ‘safety’ is always the predominant factor; price is the secondary consideration.  These guys are too smart to risk their money carelessly –

therefore, when you spot one of these coups, you can be assured that, barring trouble, this horse will run well.’
